AFTER MIDNIGHT

Long Lake, Washington

August 1, xxx6

00:21

Nothing good happens after midnight.

Emmett grew up hearing those words from his dad. They were usually said to Emmett's older brothers, who had a habit of staying out until three or four in the morning, no matter what day it was. As a boy, Emmett didn't understand what that meant. But by the time Emmett was twelve, both Harvey and Ben had ruined their lives with gangs, girls, and drugs. At only twenty-three, Harvey was in prison for possession and traffic of cocaine while nineteen-year-old Ben was a three-time baby-daddy working third shift at a gas-station in inner-city Detroit.

Emmett swore he would never become his brothers.

He had joined the Navy at seventeen and embraced their strict, disciplined way of life. Up at five, in bed by nine, Emmett saw maybe a handful of midnights in the early days of his military career before Camp Mackall changed everything.

Becoming a SEAL was Emmett's driving goal; it pushed him to train harder, work longer, and behave better than sailors five or six years older than him. So when the chance came, at only nineteen, and Emmett qualified for training, he didn't even think about it.

“Welcome to Hell Week, boys,” Master Chief Q had said, pacing the ranks of uniformed recruits with a wry grin. “Whatever you think you know about the Navy, forget it; I promise you don't know shit.”

On that day, Emmett knew he would follow Master Chief Q into a warzone without question, without fear, until the day he died. And yet here he was, seventeen years later, ready to shoot the man in the back. Life was funny like that.

Emmett shook his head and shoved his gun into the holster on his left thigh. Turning on his heel, he strode out the stable's back breezeway, directly opposite the direction One had taken. Before he finished packing, he wanted to set the horses free. Hopefully, the animals had enough basic instinct to survive in the wild. At least until the Tartans could come back for them.

His pocket buzzed, and Emmett jumped, his hand dropping to the holstered gun. It was his iPod. Emmett rolled his eyes. “Moron.”

Stopping in the breezeway arch, Emmett pulled out the iPod and unlocked it. The buzz must have been a reminder because both texts were old.

OMG! Dad! Mom's crowning!!

It's soooo gross!

Emmett snorted. That was obviously from Coral, but how had she managed to wrestle Aslan's iPod away from him? On the other hand, the young doctor had an obvious infatuation with Emmett's admittedly charming stepdaughter. But if Aslan was flirting while his wife lay compromised on the table, Emmett would—

Compromised—Evacuation—24 hours.

Shaking his head to reset his thoughts, Emmett moved to the second text.

River contacted Alex. 24.

Get home fast.

-Aslan

Emmett's hand clenched around the small device. He should have stayed home.

“Hey!” One's muffled shout carried through the empty barn. Emmett choked on a growl. What now?

Thumps and scuffles punctuated One's incoherent shouting. He was fighting someone? Who?

Emmett pocketed his iPod and un-holstered his weapon.
